Life went on, for the members of Adrix’s squad. Ralist could not return to duty, but there was little to be done for his unfortunate situation. He passed the days drinking in the harbour, riding the edge of a coin between skipping town or continuing to hide in the slums. For the rest of the weary squad, the hint of a potential large job warranted double the training sessions. Between guard and escort jobs, Tirak proved his mettle against their very best. Even Adrix, the most experienced warrior in the squad, lost as many bouts against Tirak as he won. Continue reading East Storm Company 25

After weeks of watching Master Kelren warily, Tali had seen nothing suspicious. She did not doubt the strange occurrence that Vaniya had explained, but she found nothing to add to it. The most notable thing that Kelren did was to meet with the rebels—when they were finally found by one of the East Storm “patrols.” The meeting confirmed—at last!—that Ghomal’s son, Anero, lived. He had last been seen heading for a rebel camp in some fishing villages north of Tav Rock. Continue reading East Storm Company 24

East Storm Company 23

Kelren spent most of the day trying to contain his impatience. Since the day before, he had been eagerly awaiting this afternoon’s meeting. Would the rebels of Tav Rock know Ghomal’s son, Anero? Would Anero be there, at the meeting? Kelren could only hope. Then they could put this dangerous city behind them and return to Eastpoint. Continue reading East Storm Company 23

Taking an exaggerated swig while only sipping a little was a feat that was becoming well-practiced for Talina. She sat at the bar next to Harek, the mercenary that had approved her posting on this mission, and tried to pretend she was just another mercenary in Tav Rock. “Is this the farthest you have been from home?” Harek asked, as he lowered his own cup. Continue reading East Storm Company 22

The Boundless Star and its ignorant-but-dedicated crew brought the vessel alongside the coast of the Great Isle by another long, sandy beach, dotted with dark, wet rocks. Master Kelren knew from the maps he had studied that the shore grew more stony and rough the farther southeast from this point one travelled. That was the direction that the troop of intense veteran mercenaries had set out on, once they had disembarked from the ship. If they were lucky, they wouldn’t have to look beyond the land-bridge between the Southern Sea and Copper Cove to encounter some of Tarro’s subordinates and complete their secretive mission. Continue reading East Storm Company 21

Tirak slowly glided along the cobblestones. It was his tenth rotation of the warehouse this afternoon. As he watched the sun slowly set on the city, his mind repeated the events of the last few weeks for the fiftieth rotation. That drunkard had known more than he had told Tirak—after Adrix had confirmed the stolen Company badge was a legitimate sigil, the squad had spent a few days tracking down the fool. After all, Tirak had forced him to lay low with that midnight bellow and broken front door. Continue reading East Storm Company 20

East Storm Company 19

The sun’s movement wasn’t the only difference Tali noticed as Kelren and Relis raised their heads. Where before there had been only water on all sides, there was now a long sandy beach and a dense jungle. The coast bore no landmarks. Feeling a little disappointed, Tali looked down at the magicians once more. She had imagined them sailing through a magnificent portal. Continue reading East Storm Company 19

East Storm Company 18

A few weeks after the Whalestone Jail job, Adrix’s squad was tasked with guarding a merchant’s warehouse until his ship returned to carry the goods off toward their destination. Then a Company ship would guard the vessel all the way along its voyage. For the next month, Tirak worked the beat, patrolling the warehouse during his shift and carousing the bars and brothels with his comrades-in-arms during his downtime. In the evenings, Tirak went out in search of trouble. Continue reading East Storm Company 18

Most of Mavri’s scrapes and bruises from that strange ordeal healed by the middle of the month, but the gash on her thigh started to show signs of infection. Normally, the healing of such a wound would be handled by one of the senior magicians in the Company: Master Kelren, Relis, or Eltha. With the former two absent on a secret mission, the latter had her hands completely busy. Mavri’s treatment fell to a lesser spellcaster from the ranks, a mercenary named Arrela. Continue reading East Storm Company 17

“Atmos’ arse,” Narim mumbled crudely, as he slowly lowered Mavri’s chest onto the thick moss. He leaned back onto the overgrown rock. It seemed to bring him a great deal of relief, despite its hard surface. All three of the East Storm mercenaries were laden with Mavri’s equipment and supplies. Narim lifted his eyes to stare at his blacksmith charge, squinting lest sweat sting him. “You got half the Storm Fort in there?” Continue reading East Storm Company 16
